Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is a program required for those conducting research with human subjects. This type of research is completed with either a survey or interview being the most common method. Here at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, CITI is a standard human subjects ethics and compliance training required to meet with the university's commitment to protecting human participants within conducted research. The average person may finish the course anywhere from four to seven hours depending on the length of sessions. After completion, researchers must renew their certification every three years to remain qualified. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) advises all members of research to complete training at least one week prior to submitting a proposal application form.
Who Should Complete CITI Training?

Students or Principle Investigators submit an Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposal for review, renewal, or change of any sort.
Faculty staff assisting as a mentor for an undergraduate/graduate student conducting research.
Research team planning to interact with human subjects.
Instructors are teaching students where they are learning about research methods and research engagement with human subjects.
Students completing a course focused on research methods and research engagement with human subjects.
Current IRB and University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire faculty members.
How to Complete Human Subjects Protections Training
Visit the CITI website https://about.citiprogram.org/en/homepage/
Create an account affiliated with your school and email address
"Add Course" to personal Learner Tools for your school
Each course option will be directed to the topic of your interest in the research you're pursuing to continue the most fitting option
To complete all modules, you must score an 80% or higher for each quiz (quizzes can be reviewed and repeated to attain a passing score)
When all modules and quizzes have been completed, you will need to submit the Record ID course certification on an IRB application form.
CITI Courses I Completed
Since my research will be conducted with human participants, I recently completed the Human Subjects Research (Curriculum Group), Social-Behavioral-Educational Researchers (Course Learner Group), and 1 - Basic Course (Stage). These were all under requirements set by the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire to help further my knowledge and protection of human subjects. Below is a list of example courses completed to fulfill my certificate specific to my research project.
